the natural mountain border of Europe and Asia, in the Middle Ural, the most attractive, alluring and richest region of Russia.

Pervouralsky Novotrubny Works is one of the oldest mills of Russia as well. Its history dates back to the 18th century, to the times of the reign of Peter the Great. In 1732 an iron-foundry was founded by Vasily Demidov, a prominent Russian manufacturer, and given the name of Vassilyevo-Shaytansky.

It took the works about two centuries to go, and in 1920 the first one-meter

length tube was produced. That was a memorable year for the works and the beginning of the industrial tube production in the Ural region.

In 1934 the facilities of the new works were launched. There were three rolling mills, two tube-drawing benches, a heat treatment, a tube-cutting and a cylinder-making mills. Since then Pervouralsky Novotrubny Works has been making its chronicle.

The war years of 1941-1945 were the hardest, but most productive time, so as Pervouralsky Novotrubny Works was the one among the few mills able to satisfy the needs of the country and the country’s defences in full.

The postwar period was marked by renovation, extreme development of the technological processes and mastering new materials. In the late fifties Pervouralsky Novotrubny Works opened the production of seamless stainless steel tubes in the just constructed tube-drawing mill, one of the biggest of the kind.

Later, at the beginning of sixties, the joint intellectual projects and tenacious practical efforts of the Russian scientists and engineers were realized in application of a unit of a continuous mill for plugging tubes. Within the next years 30-102 mill underwent consecutive reconstruction of the units and achieved the annual tube production of 720.000 MT.

In seventies and eighties the development of Pervouralsky Novotrubny Works was a typical reflection of the specific trend of the country’s economy.

The new mills were put in the operation to produce superheater and heat exchanger tubes, seamless stainless steel tubes for nuclear power engineering, stainless steel light-wall and capillary pipes for automotive and aircraft engineering.

In 1992 Pervouralsky Novotrubny Works has been reorganized into the Joint-Stock Company. The new management made emphasis to attracting home and foreign investment, ensuring steady financial flow, improving the company’s management structure, on the one hand, and to keeping to prominent traditions of the Ural craftsmen, making use of every possible means of the works’ manufacturing facilities, on the other hand.

Nowadays Pervouralsky Novotrubny Works is in the list of top ten of the Russian tube manufacturers. Its trademark is recognized both at home and abroad.

There were flights and falls in the history of the works, but every time it has managed to hold out. The period of economic transformations and regarded economic and social shocks did not pass by our works. In 1998 Novotrubny found itself on the brink of bankruptcy (non-payment of wages, drop of output volume, strikes, tax arrears). The staff number was halved. Right at that moment the team of new competent managers took personal control of the plant.

In the shortest time it was managed to consolidate the interests of the stockholders, carry out an administrative-managerial reform. The sale structures were established quite quickly, the status of legal department and economic services became stronger. The arrears of the works to the budgets of various kinds and unbudgetary funds were restructured, the investments were attracted. As a result, when in 1998 the works produced 442 000 tons of tubes, in 1999 the increase in production was 5%, in 2000 - 34,5 %, and according to the results of the year 2003 - 55 %. The debts in payment of wages were settled, the wage value is indexed regularly. The plant effects the tax payments in proper time.

Pervouralsky Novotrubny Works succeeded in taking the fourth place in the country according to the results of the year 2003 by having produced over 684 000 tons of tubes, which was by 11,2 % more than showings of the year 2002. In terms of money the volumes of products sales increased by 40 % within the year, the export deliveries growing more than by a third - nearly 70 000 tons of tubes were dispatched to the foreign customers.
